A Brief History

Bristol Friends of the Earth came into being in October 1971 with a dump of 500 non-returnable bottles on the doorstep of Schweppes in Brislington. It was one of the first local groups to be set up in the country. Bristol FoE has seen many changes in size and composition but certain themes are constant.

• In 1972, Bristol FoE held a vigil against the outer circuit road through east Bristol. The road was cancelled only to rear its ugly head as the spine road at the beginning of the 1990s.
• In December 1975 an aluminium collection was started. In March 1976, the Council stopped collecting waste paper so FoE started its own waste paper collection, which saved 32 tons of paper from landfill. 24 years on through Bristol FoE, Avon FoE and finally Resourcesaver it is now one of the largest door to door recycling schemes in the country. From April 1999 to Jan 2000 it handled 12000 of recyclable material.
